Pau Gasol had surgery on his left index finger after an injury during practice with Spain’s national team. He will be sidelined at least three weeks.
The Los Angeles Lakers power forward reportedly damaged a ligament in his non-shooting hand on Monday while blocking a shot(whaaat? a block?) The injury looks to keep him sidelined for up to 20 days. Gasol has been quoted as saying he wants to play in the European Championship which starts September 7th.
“I want to be with my teammates and fight for the championship,” the Spanish news agency Efe quoted him as saying at a news conference in Cadiz. “I don’t see why I would have to drop out.”
He has been in contact with the Lakers, and is expecting to gain approval from the team to compete soon.
“Pau had a conversation with our head trainer this morning,” said Lakers spokesman John Black. “We’re trying to get our team doctor in touch with the doctor that did the surgery. Right now, we’re gathering information.”
When I read the headline, I was nervous, and felt as though we could be cheated out of one of our best players because of an internation tournament. But it looks as though us Laker fans can breathe. He should be fine, and it is his non-shooting hand. However, its never good when one of your top players sustains an injury, this is something that could flare up down the road in the regular season, and could possibly hinder his performance.
